Can you briefly tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue photography?
I started photography when my father gave me his camera as I prepared to depart for the UK to pursue my undergraduate degree in filmmaking. Being a full-time film director now, I often find myself immersed in a world of compromises. Photography, however, offers me a precious solitude, a chance to craft my own narrative. My passion lies in storytelling, photography gives me the ability to narrate tales with one frame.
What drove you to submit your work to the Px3 competition and your thoughts on how winning this competition impacted your artistic journey?
I feel that PX3 is a comprehensive photography competition that provides opportunities for photographers from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to showcase their work. Winning in this competition is indeed a significant achievement, it is always nice when your work receives validation. It’s another step from a long journey.
Could you describe any challenges you faced while capturing this moment (winning image/s)?
I believe that the most challenging part was creating moments to make them appear as if they were lived for the first time and not planned. On a more technical aspect the shoot was entirely captured on film with only 15 rolls over a period of one week. I wanted to slow down the process for the character to inhabit this astronaut experience as much as possible.
What, in your opinion, are the most important factors in creating great images?
I am not sure I have the right answer because it is all very subjective, but I believe that a great image tells a story.
What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of photography?
I believe that photography lies in striking the delicate balance between technicality and creativity. Balancing these two elements can be challenging as it often involves making quick decisions in the field. Its this duality that makes photography exciting.
What motivates and drives your photography?
My photography is fundamentally driven by a desire to tell compelling stories. What truly motivates me is the ability to craft a character from scratch and breathe life into them through a series of carefully curated moments. My goal is to evoke emotions, spark curiosity, and ignite imaginations in each photograph. The art of storytelling through photography is my driving force.
What’s next for you in your career as a photographer?
I am fortunate to have two exhibitions lined up for the remainder of this year, and I’m excited to work on a new photography project for 2024.
